I had the baked gnocchi (you can choose from two sizes- large and regular) and the portion was plentiful, the dish was delicious, and the sauce was generous. I loved how chewy each piece was! The red sauce was brimming with flavor and paired so nicely with everything. I loved the addition of smoked mozzarella, too. It was my first time trying the risotto, which I really ended up enjoying. We both loved the diced asparagus bits, which added crunch to an otherwise soft and savory dish. I was blown away by how flavorful each bite was! Definitely the surprise of the evening. :- )
Saw Gordon Ramsey's picture and made a joke that this was on kitchen nightmares. And it actually was (which I had no idea)! But Gordon apparently did a good job. I'm picky with food, and grew up in the heart of Rhode Island, in an Italian family, so I know good Italian food. We stopped in really just on a whim, and because they had chicken cacciatore - which is either hard to find, or not made correctly (it's tough for a restaurant to pull off because it needs to cook all day).
It was another cold Sunday night, I didn't book the reservation, it was a little bit crowded but we still got a 2-people table to fit in. We met Pad, the guy who was mentioned in that TV episode as a bus boy+ manager + boss ( pretty much like every position you name it). And he was very nice to us, he told us that he enjoyed the feeling of working. He was everywhere!
They have a nice bean topping for the bread they serve. And while the spread is great, I personally would enjoy a crispier Italian bread. The one they offered is nothing to write home about. But this isn't enough for me to knock off any points (even though I do appreciate a good bread).
Anyways, I only had the cacciatore, and some calamari for an app, but it was all great, and absolutely up to par with anywhere else I've eaten on the north end. The calamari was nice and crispy, as it should be - none of that gross chewiness. I'm not convinced the cacciatore was given all day to cook, as it should. It also wasn't in a nice thick red gravy as it should be, but it was very tasty. Service was extremely friendly, and they kept a perfect balance of letting you enjoy your meal and taking their time, without being too slow or difficult to track down. Our waiter (not sure his name) was also very personable, held non-dinner related conversation, and gave us a recommendation after overhearing us talk about how we like our calamari.
After discovering nearly an hour wait at a restaurant across the street, my sister and our 2 daughters decided to give this restaurant a try. No wait and the reviews seemed to be good! And of course after learning this place was on Kitchen Nightmares, we HAD to try it! Pat greeted us immediately and was super friendly. We were served bread and his special bean spread, which was so delicious we asked for the recipe (and he willingly shared it!). Gabe was our server and it turns out he is the son of one of the owners! He, too, was very friendly and gave his recommendations on what we should try.
We ended up going with the veal parmesan with a side of tortellini with marinara, steamed mussels, tortellini soup and a shrimp pasta dish made with penne pasta. The food was absolutely delicious!!!! The veal parmesan was so tender and the marinara sauce was to die for. Just the right amount of spices! The tortellini was soft but still yummy!! My daughter loved the mussels and the broth was so good, we literally ate it with soup spoons! My sister's shrimp pasta dish was heavenly! This restaurant is definitely no longer a Nightmare!! We raved to our family who still lives in Boston that they have to try this place!
My friend made reservations for this restaurant for our little reunion during Easter. I never heard of this restaurant and was wondering why she didn't pick a more well-known place in the North End, like Giacomo's or Neptune Oyster. However, after having a late lunch here, I was glad she decided to come here! When I first walked into the restaurant, I thought it was way too small and wondered where they were gonna seat us because we had a party of 7. The host led us towards the right side of the restaurant and there were more tables there. It's actually a big restaurant!
Great service! We went here for a graduation celebration lunch with 8 people, and we were running about 20 minutes late due to traffic and they said it was fine after we called ahead. The owner (?) was chatting with us and really personable. Our waiter was really nice and attentive. I was torn between getting what I'd normally order while out (the chicken parm) and the lasagna, but I went with the lasagna. It was good, nothing spectacular. They had gluten free options, which was great for my boyfriend's aunt, and everyone else really enjoyed their food. The food did kind of take a while to come out, but we were eight people so that could be why.
My girlfriend and I walked over after we walked out of L'Osteria due to poor service. The staff greeted us very well, and we were immediately seated. We ordered an appetizer (calamari), two appetizer-size dishes (clams & linguini, gnocchi) and one full-size dish (cannelloni). Liked that they had the appetizer-size portion as we wanted to try several different dishes. Food came relatively quickly and was good - gnocchi were soft and chewy, with smoky Parmesan cheese on top, clams were large and cooked well, calamari was seasoned well and lightly fried, and cannelloni was tasty (though a little heavy). We felt the number of dishes was just right for the two of us, and service was good (they were prompt on fixing a wobble in the table and were attentive to our requests). Price was right as well with total cost $66 (incl two glasses of wine).
